Fire or evacuation with animals

Prepare a kit, know where to go and how to carry each animal before civil protection orders you out.

What to do, step by step

1. 1Prepare an emergency kit in advance: a carrier per animal, leash, water and food for three days, medication, a copy of the registration and vaccines, a recent photo.
2. 2At the first warning, close the animals in one room or in the carriers: frightened animals hide and time is lost catching them.
3. 3Leave with the animals; never leave them shut in or tied up. If you must choose, take first the ones that cannot survive alone.
4. 4Large animals (horses, livestock): open the doors of sheds and fences so they can flee the fire if you cannot take them.
5. 5Follow the instructions of civil protection and the firefighters; ask which shelters accept animals.
6. 6Afterwards: watch for burnt paws, coughing and eyes irritated by smoke — the vet should check them.
